Breaking into High Finance Without a Finance Degree

I am an older undergrad (post-military service), in my senior year, and I'm trying to break into high finance. I also majored in Marketing & Psychology so I don't have any academic experience in Finance. I'm interested in stocks but not as much. I did however have a commercial banking internship and I loved it. I really see myself working on credit deals and analyzing companies' performance as well as the market. In the future I see myself becoming a CEO/CFO

Any tips on how I can break in to any of these roles?

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some actionable tips to help you break into high finance without a finance degree:

  1. Leverage Your Commercial Banking Internship:

    • Highlight your experience in commercial banking on your resume and during interviews. Emphasize the skills you gained, such as analyzing credit deals and company performance.
  2. Network Aggressively:

    • Attend industry events, join finance-related clubs, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Networking can open doors to opportunities that might not be advertised.
  3. Gain Relevant Certifications:

    • Consider obtaining certifications such as CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or FRM (Financial Risk Manager) to bolster your finance knowledge and credentials.
  4. Pursue Additional Education:

    • Enroll in finance-related courses or bootcamps. The WSO Academy offers various courses, such as Financial Modeling & Valuation, which can provide you with the necessary skills.
  5. Tailor Your Resume:

    • Use templates like the Investment Banking Resume Template or Private Equity Resume Template available on WSO to structure your resume in a way that highlights your relevant experience and skills.
  6. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Utilize resources like the Investment Banking Interview Prep and Private Equity Interview Prep courses to get ready for technical and behavioral interviews.
  7. Consider Entry-Level Roles:

    • Look for entry-level roles in corporate banking, credit analysis, or financial analysis. These positions can serve as stepping stones to more advanced roles in high finance.
  8. Showcase Transferable Skills:

    • Emphasize skills from your marketing and psychology background that are relevant to finance, such as analytical thinking, understanding consumer behavior, and strategic planning.

By following these steps, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for roles in high finance, even without a traditional finance degree.
