If I had to pick with identical profiles and grades, I’ll personally favour the physics course as in my head that’s a “harder” degree but you’re really splitting hairs here as people will be looking at your university more than your course. 

I’d say do the course that gives you the best chance at doing well but also recruit. What I said above only holds true if you’re comping a first in physics vs a first in economics

This is just for the first CV screening btw, as once you’re in an interview it makes no difference

 

study physics - you can get away with not being at a target if you study a difficult degree. no point in studying something mickey mouse like econ at a semi

 

Needs to be said.

Econ at a non-Oxbridge/LSE is going to be seen as generic and not particularly rigorous. 

 

Getting into HF out of uni will be difficult with any of those, but physics might be a slightly better bet.
