Not just appropriate, it's a must (I lead recruitment at my bank, for context). We dock points for people who don't come with a calculator, pen and notepad. Come prepared - the interviewer will guide you if it's not to be used for a certain set of technical questions.

Nothing worse than starting a line of questions and a candidate saying "can I borrow a pen and piece of paper?" Yikes.

I’ve heard a notepad and pen are a must. But I have never heard of anyone using a calculator. I think for the most part you should be able to do the mental math with the numbers and percentages they give you.
