Career Dilemma: S&T vs. Private Banking

Hey everyone,

I'm in the midst of making an internship decision, and I'd love to get some insights from those with experience in finance. I'm currently interested in private banking/family office roles and trying to understand how my initial career steps might impact my future options.

I have two 2025 internship offers in North America from mid-market banks:

  1. Sales & Trading (S&T)
  2. Private Banking (PB)

A couple of questions I have:

Q1. Is it possible to transition from Sales & Trading to Private Banking after working in S&T for a few years? I'm curious if the skills and experiences from S&T would make this move feasible down the line.

Q2. From a career optionality perspective, would you recommend me starting in PB or S&T? I heard S&T gives you more skills and career exits, but I would like to confirm with people working in the industry.

Thanks in advance!
