When layoffs were abound, I automated a personalized e-mail blast to 500-800 e-mail addresses. I heard back from maybe a dozen of them saying thanks for the interest but they weren't hiring. Got one interview, which ended up turning into an offer.

Key takeaway: - especially for cold calling/e-mailing its a numbers game - all you need is one good bite

Was this lateral or entry-level?

Somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 (about 40% if I had to guess) and all of those that respond will actually talk to me on the phone.

i think it depends on how good-looking is your resume. If you got some good internships on your resume, 9 out of 10 would be happy to talk to you over phone, based to my experience.

If you think of networking in terms of percentage of "successful" contacts you are setting yourself up to fail. Enjoy the networking process in and of itself - if you're always gunning after certain outcomes, the person you're talking to will realize that and get turned off to what you're trying to accomplish. Just meet people, ask them about themselves and enjoy the process of meeting new friends and becoming gradually more plugged in with every new person you meet. Think "what can I learn from this person" not "what can I get from this person."

Jhoratio,

I whole heartedly agree with you here. I just wanted to gauge my response to attempts on a relative basis.
KICKIN ASS AND TAKING NAMES

just wondering...if your sending out a short email just for networking/a phone call (and potentially an internship) is it a good idea to attach your resume? or is that not needed/necessary?

I actually calculated my conversion rate at some point, and I think it was around 50% of people responded to my initial e-mail. However, a far lesser number actually continues to stay in touch, and even less have actually helped me out with forwarding resumes and such. So yeah, you're probably going to end up disappointed if you put too much emphasis on how many people aren't willing to help out.... just focus on the few people who are generous enough to be helpful.
