Cold Emailing Cover Letter
I know the cold emailing topic has been brought up several times before but I could not find this specific question:
When cold emailing MMs and Boutiques, do you:
- Put cover letter in body of email and attach resume
- Put cover leter in body of email and attached cover letter and resume in one file
- Put a small introduction in email and attach cover letter and resume in one file
Advantages of putting it in body is people won't have to open an attachment to see it. Disadvantages would be they see a long email and put it in the "i'll read it later" folder.

If you are contacting someone in particular use the e-mail body as the cover letter, attach resume. That is how I have done it in the past. Interesting in hearing what others think as well.
I attach the cover letter and CV, say hello and why I am e-mailing in the body (2 sentences).
Put cover letter in the body and attach the resume. Trust me, not one is going to spend the time to open an attached cover letter, but they will look at the resume.
What if they were both attached in one file and the body of the email contains just a short summary.
New Yorker and chitownanalyst - what kind of success have you had with your approaches? Ofcourse I'm sure this depends on other factors such as your resume etc.. but I'm assuming you have tried different approaches over time.
I've had about 25% success rate with putting the cover letter as the body of the e-mail and attaching resume. I've been cold e-mailing contacts off of LinkedIn. My school (non-target) does not have any alumni where I am looking to move (small mid-west city). Good luck.
Just curious what is everyone's sucess rate with cold emailing (particularly with Prop Trading firms)? Unfortunately I don't go to a target school and at this point it is pretty much my only option....

Has anybody thought about rather than attaching resume. Build Visual CV resume. That way the manager or HR does not have to open an resume attached. The url link is right there and it provides much information. And even have the linkedin ID in your visual cv resume. These people don't know you, so this way making their life easy. It also looks creative. So have the cover letter along with the Visual CV link and have a catchy subject line. They can view and if they want can convert into PDF..
So instead of having them quickly open an attachment, and then easily forward the entire email to HR with a message "like the candidate, include in first round phone," You want them to click on a link, look at resume, decide they like it, have them save it as a PDF on THEIR computer, manually attach to an email they send to HR (or anyone in the group), and then send it out..........................................that sounds so much easier.
Yes I was wondering as well if sending a link to your resume instead of attaching it would probably be easier. Since downloading an attachment and then finding it, it clutters your space. I know personally I dont like opening attachments for that reason.

I do think they need a warning when you're posting on old threads like this. A pop up that says "you're about to comment on a thread that was last active XX months ago. Are you sure you want to proceed?".
I didn't look at how old the thread was. The content is ridiculous and I had to respond to it.
