Cold/Warm Email to Recruiter after Rejecting Internship Offer 3 Years Ago

In 2018 I was unable to accept a corporate banking internship offer (US BB satellite office in Europe) as it did not full the mandatory internship critera in my University. Now I'm trying to get in with credit research background.

Do you think contacting the recruiter this way would enhance my chances vs. applying normally? Also, feel free to rip it apart.

Dear XXX,

I want to thank you for the opportunity to interview with and to receive an internship offer from the Corporate Banking team in 2018.
Although I could not accept the offer for technical reasons at the time, I left the interviews with XYZ (VP) and XYZ (MD) with very positive impressions.
Since then it also became clear that Corporate Banking would be the right direction for my career, for which I managed to gain valuable experience in the last 2.5 years.
Therefore I would like to hereby apply to the Corporate Banking Analyst position. Please find my CV attached.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

Best,

When you rejected the opportunity did you explain it this way or not?

I would remove “hereby apply to...”, sounds way too formal and weird. Change it to something like: “I am hoping to get an opportunity to interview with the team and would like to apply for a full time position”

I think as long as you were clear before (and it didn’t sound like a BS reason) and you left things off in a good way this will help. At the end of the day they liked you, so if you didn’t burn the bridge they should be happy to interview you again.
