College Student Career Advice

I am a junior currently majoring in Accounting. I am getting ready to take my GMAT and looking into different paths for my future, but i would like some advice from those of you who are familiar with the industry.

Over the weekend i saw show about RNC capital management (LA based company)and how they manage the money of athletes/actors etc...was very interesting to me. Although Finance and Accounting are related, I am not a big fan of finance/stock market. I was wondering the following:

1) what type of industry is this: assset management or wealth management or something else? 2) is accounting going to help me in obtaining a position in such company, or is this mostly a field for people with finance majors/backgrounds? 3)i am looking into grad-schools, and in order to get into that industry, would simply a master of accounting be enough, or would i need something like a masters in management? 4)I have read on many posts on this forum about individuals who decide to go back and get their MBA's after obtaining a couple of years of experience in order to get into better schools. Would it be bad for a college student to get his MBA right after his undergrad?

Thank you for your advice!

  1. sounds like wealth management

  2. having an accounting background never hurts

  3. if your definition of "that industry" means wealth management, you will not need a master of accounting

  4. you will have a better shot at a top b-school with work experience unless you have an impeccable academic background and gmat score

Do not go straight to business school from undergrad, 3/4 of the education will be lost on you. Part of the value of an MBA is being around people from different areas of business who can share their work experiences, networks, and life lessons in their specific fields. You will have none of that other than "Hey i mowed my neighbors lawn for $10 an hour". I don't care what anyone says there is a certain chasm between a 28 year old and a 22 year old and it is created by "real life experience".
God bless you if you try but I am just hitting you with facts.

thanks for the advice. Rain_Maker, i will definitely not get my MBA right out of undegrad. you state that I should not go to business school right out of undergrad, do you feel the same way about going to business school out of undergrad for a masters in accounting? I would like to do that in order to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam as early as possible.

Regarding wealth management, i would really like to be more on the operation side rather than portfolio management. I hope that not having a finance degree would not hurt my chances.
