Consequences of Offer Leverage

I am only a few years into my career so it would be great to get some perspective on this situation.

Currently in a HCOL market with ~3 YOE. I really enjoy working at my current shop. The team is great, work is fulfilling, really strong exposure to volume / good deals, and I am given a lot of trust in the process relative to my more junior level. The one issue has always been below market comp. I recently was externally approached to join a competing firm in our space. I decided to explore the role and ended up getting a super compelling offer on the numbers and title - but would be compromising on hours, culture, and location.

I ultimately brought the external offer to my current company and they countered very quickly. They immediately lifted my comp and promoted me. My executive team was very supportive although there has been some slight tension since it happened. It's definitely improved as the days pass but it does make me think. I am very convicted and confident in my decision but curious to know what the internal consequences of this can look like over time and what experiences others are willing to share where there's been a similar story.

If you're friends with your co-workers, it's not unusual for things to get a little awkward or tense whenever there's a comp or big picture career discussion. In my experience it usually loosens up and everyone will go back to normal shortly as long as you had the conversations the right way (e.g. emphasized that you really want to be there, weren't too demanding or asking for something out of market).
