Hi guys. I have a situation and I would love some perspective from you guys:
-Graduate Jan/14 and have 3 classes in the fall semester (all evenings)
-CFA L1 Dec 2013
-Finance major from non-target school 3.3 GPA
-Previous experience includes group insurance sales role with insurance company...did this for 8 months until April and exceeded all expectations
-Quit insurance role in April and began spending all my efforts on finding solid finance internship. I knew it was going to be tough but Insurance wasn't my thing tbh. Ended up interviewing as summer i banking analyst (didn't get), treasury analyst (didn't get), analyst with o&g firm (didn't get). I have a very solid sales background ( have worked sales for the past few years through school, and REAL sales positions ie b2b not retail) but not a lot of analytical skills and I think these all F'ed me up in my interviews.
-Basically, I haven't worked the entire summer as I figured I could land something decent and my resume has been bare since March. (I know I have been stupid counting my chickens before they hatched so plz refrain from the negative comments as I am admitting my mistakes)
In an ideal world, I would love something part time in the fall. I would love a full time gig as well but I know that the CFA only being 3 months away is going to take a lot out of me (and my classes). I want to break into either institutional sales, or private wealth management once I graduate and would love to transition a role starting in sept to full time when I graduate.
Simply put, I have lived on my own for the past 3 years paying my own rent and bills need to be paid. I cannot survive anymore on 0 income. Point blank - i need/want a job.
What do you all suggest I do? I do not mind cold calling/emailing/whatever but I feel I have an idea/goal in my head that I want to pursue but I am completely oblivious as to how to achieve it. Can any monkey's shed some light on my situation?
If you want to break into institutional sales/PWM, why were you interviewing for IB/Treasury types of internships? Why not sales/PWM?
lol... because there are very few of these PWM positions (especially when I started looking back in late March/April), so I was applying to several jobs (finance related) b/c I still wanted to gain experience any way I could, and bills need to be paid. If you live with your parents, applying for one niche isn't an issue, but if your a big boy like me, there is bills. The ibanking job, I literally just sent out a resume/cover letter for shits and giggles and received a call back a day later. Alas, it did not work out. Also..side note, but when your offered an interview in solid financial roles, you are going to take them point blank.
Anyways, does anyone have any decent advise that doesn't involve a stupid question?
Definitely not a stupid question...I also have a background in sales and know from experience that there are a bunch of PWM/sales roles out there that are probably easier to get than the others you mentioned. The implied advice was if you want to work in those roles, hustle and find an internship in that area...especially if you want to transition directly from an internship into that role FT.
Since you're being a dick when I was asking a legitimate question (and out of genuine curiosity, not snarkiness) I'll throw it out there that your spelling and grammar comes across as awful and you should work on it if you write/speak the same way in applications and interviews. Take that as helpful advice.
Fair enough. I saw very few of these positions available when I started applying, so I knew that I needed to apply to other jobs as well. I did not really discriminate as to the positions, as long as they would give me that much needed experience.
With respect to your other comment, if one spoke and wrote in real life as how one writes on the internet, then almost no one would have a job. How I write on an internet forum frequented by mainly 21 year olds who live with their parents does not really affect me.
what makes you think you are the only one who live on your own and pays your own bills? Im pretty sure a large majority of the people on this site either live on campus as students or are professionals... just sayin

Also, get off your high horse dude, the unfortunate reality of the situation is that in most cases, especially before you get your foot in the door via an interview, you are held to the same standards on paper that people in easier situations than you are in are. Sounding bitter about it or adopting a holier-than-thou attitude won't change that, it'll just piss people off.
