Deffered to someone else

So, I cold emailed a VP about a week ago. It was a long shot but I thought it was worth a try. A week went by with no response, so I thought it was over, but today I got an email. Although, the email wasn't from him. It was from an ascosiate and it goes like this

"_______ forwared your query to me. I would be glad to answer your questions about ___ by phone if this is convinient. I can be reached by email or any of the numbers below. Best regards, "

What are your opinions on this? I just replied asking when a good time to call tomorrow would be. How helpful could this be? The firm is in DC and I will be in DC this summer, so should I ask to meet in person in the phone convo?

THanks

They replied so that's a good sign. Just don't screw up the phone conversation, and see where it goes from there.

"It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous. "

Best way to not screw up is just be friendly and interested in that persons story and their firm. Do not look at the call as a way to "get a job", the focus of the call should be to become friendly with the guy, ask about his story etc and get him to like you. At the end, suggest to meet for coffee at some point, and also ask if there is anyone else at the firm that he feels that you could benefit from talking to. Alot of times the call will naturally take the internship/job route, but don't be too over eager in that regard. Know your story cold and why you want to do banking (this is basically how you should introduce yourself) and then try to get him to talk as much as possible because people love talking about themselves.

It sounds like the VP is using the associate to screen you and figure out if you're worth talking to/bringing in. Smile while you're talking (you'd be amazed but you can actually hear the difference) and just be friendly. Good luck man

fake it till you make it bro. be personable, listen to what the other guy has to say and ask relevant questions. the rule is to get someone else to speak about themselves more than you. if you can keep the conversation going and their mouth running for an hour, and can hear a change in the level of verbal communication. ie. excitement, enthusiasm, you will be good to go.

just had the conversation... it went okay not great. There were some awkward times where she would ask me a question and I would answer and she wouldn't say anything and then I would start saying something again just to get rid of the silence. A couple of times after the silence she would start a long response, so i guess its just her style. We had a couple of laughs which was good. I think I may have done too much talking, but did a good amount of listening. I didn't really ask about internships or anything, but did ask to get coffee sometime this summer when I am in town. She said that would work and just shoot her an email when I get to town. I was sure to thank her several times for speaking with me, and sounded respectful. Should I write a follow up email in the next couple of days as well? Any thoughts on how you thought i did?
