Division 1, Power 5 Athlete Seeking Advice Heading Into Recruitment
I'm a rising sophomore at a Power 5, historically athletics-focused school, which is a semi-target for IB. As an athlete in a highly competitive program, my schedule doesn’t allow much time for participation in finance clubs that typically boost resumes.
Despite this, I’ve maintained a high GPA (3.7+) during my first year and have gained practical/technical experience through a RE internship during the summer offseason. I’ve also completed a WSP financial modeling course and plan to attend a bootcamp before school starts. Additionally, I have a PE/IB internship lined up for the fall semester.
Given my limited ability to join finance clubs, I'm thinking that this will be a big disadvantage. Most of my school's IB placements follow a similar track with clubs. As someone from a semi-target school, what advice would you give for securing summer junior internships and getting my resume in front of the right people? My friends at target schools have mentioned that the process is much easier for them. Any advice is appreciated.
What sport
Swimming
I swam as well had the same issue in not being able to join the groups in my college because of how time intensive they were. I think your best option is to network like a mofo and learn technicals like the back of your hand.
Gotcha, were you able to utilize swimming to network?
Was in almost exact same situation but in a sport that has significantly less presence in banking than swimming. I would say network with any and all athletes no matter the sport or division and even people that swam in HS or club in college. Also if their any foundations related to swimming, look at board members that are in finance and see if you can reach out to them. But thats a bit of a long play.
There’s also a program called Make a Play that is specifically for athletes that gives case competitions and guaranteed interviews with firms like MS and BofA as well as consulting if you perform well. They factor diversity too but they really don’t care that much as long as your GPA is good and even then there average was like 3.5. They don’t usually have open applications, but just reach out and they will give you one.
