Do Asian Boys Just Get Interviews Way Later

Curious on this. Generally felt it to be true except for a few firms, and I only had 3 first round interviews and 1-2 technical screens. Definitely feeling discouraged as an international student who wanted this role very early and prepped for so long compared to others.

I'm going to be frank with you - it's hard to make a case for having to hire an international student right now for US or Euro positions. There is ample supply of candidates and the market has been soft until recently. 

On top of that, international students are over-indexed in terms of applications for IB, even at MM firms. I have to imagine it's just insane at EBs and BBs.

 

Second this. In the US, the visa situation is bleak, incredibly expensive to sponsor someone for very low and falling odds, and there's plenty of equally well-qualified people who don't need any sponsorship. I used to review resumes at a BB, and agree with you international students were WAY overrepresented and found a lot of them struggled with behavioral questions and cultural fit, so that doesn't help either.

OP, I would expect that this is your norm, it's just from being an international student and there is no flood of interviews coming "way later". Focus on smaller firms and keep networking. You may need to be open to jobs outside of IB too.

 

Sorry to break it to you, but there are definitely few Asian male students who get more interviews than they can handle. Either who are well-rounded or extremely sharp while not socially awkward, even with visa issues. I can think of at least 5 from my recruiting cycle + prior year.
