Do BBs usually pay for flights to interviews?
I had one interview with a very large European BB that did not offer to reimburse me for millage, approx 250, to a DCM interview. Now I have another firm, a top 3 BB, that will not reimburse for flights to a BO interview.
Off-cycle? ...then most likely no. Recruiting season, depends.

I interviewed for a regional office at my BB for my SA last second (they were a new office and had just got approved for their first intern) and I had to pony up the $800 for the flight. I did it, and now I work in the Chicago office full time so it was worth it, but it still sucked.
i have only xp with the front office roles (ibd mostly i think and dcm at RBS) if its for London, they all pay regardless of your location... however:
RBS & HSBC - 200GBP (if i remember well) Barcap - 250GBP (again not 100% sure) BAML & DB - 300GBP JPM - 350GBP & Heatrhrow Express GS - 350+GBP cant remember about CS MS, DB, etc.
"better" banks fix everything in advance with their travel agencies shittier banks make you pay everything and find flights yourself, and then they pay you back (few weeks later) up to the max amount stated in the contract
GS paid above 350GBP for my tickets to interview in London. They'll book the travel for you and send you your tickets through mail shortly after.
They paid for flights, drivers to and from airport (both my place and on site) and hotel. And when I say for me I mean for everyone who interviewed who didn't live within driving distance And this wasn't special treatment-I was begging them to work there, not other way around. Many friends have had same experience with exception of sometimes you gotta get your own cab ride.

I did an off-cycle superday for a 2nd tier BB in an AM group.... and they flew across country to NYC. Booked tickets for me and reimbursed all the other assorted expenses after. Very surprised to hear people have experienced differently.
I have yet to pay for anything either. Most expensive flight was just a bit under $1000 because of how soon they booked it, plus associated expenses like taxi and food.
The roles I applied for were DCM and a BO role. From my experience and based on what I have heard even MM banks pay for the flights, hotels, and food for FO roles.
MO/Risk from JPM/GS/MS in Asia and was told flight was all self-funded for final round (based in EU)
For private banking (front office roles), GS didn't pay for flights to the HK office (from Canada) last year. CS held teleconference interviews for their Zurich & Singapore offices and didn't fly us over from Hong Kong.

I got an email invite for a final interview that will require a pretty long haul flight. The trouble is, I got the email on Friday evening, and the interview is on Tuesday, which means I can't wait till Monday to call them to ask them whether they will reimburse my flights.
I've gone ahead and bought the tickets myself now. Their policy states that if you have to take a flight, you should speak to them and they will book you, or will advise you which flights you can take. It also says more generally that should you need to take a flight, they will cover the cost of an economy class ticket.
The HR people do know that I am currently quite far and would need to fly in.
So will they still pay me back or will they be bitches and claim that I should have called them first? I've booked a standard economy ticket obviously.
You should be covered, but no one on this board can give you an accurate response. Reimbursement isn't a set of algorithms that determine whether or not to write you a check, it's an HR person who can choose to interpret "policy" any way he/she pleases.
Where are you going? I think Tuesday's a bit early given the holiday this weekend
I once got screwed by a bank who initially agreed in writing to cover my flights and then backed off when I presented them the invoice.

I have been offered a first round interview for a sophomore summer internship with a MM investment bank in Chicago. The problem I would definitely have to take a flight in order to get to Chicago. What is the process like for this? Should the firm pay for my flight? Will I have to go numerous times if I make it past the first round?
I plan on asking HR these questions too, but I would just like to hear some other people's experiences in similar situations.

If they are a legit firm, HR should be contacting you soon to arrange everything (ie they will pay for flight, hotel, food, cab, etc...). And it's probably just one round of interviews, but I guess you never know...
HR pays for flight...check your emails...no worries
Ask for it. But as a sophmore it may be on your dime TBH.

Hi guys, I'm in a sticky situation, and I was wondering if you could share some insights to my predicament. I'm based in the US.
I have a superday with BB(1) on Jan 15, and I'm also currently interviewing for another position with another firm BB(2) that has a superday on Jan 9-10 (they have not gotten back to me yet though). I really don't want to fly from my place to NYC and then back and then fly to NYC again. BB(1) is asking for confirmation from me to schedule a flight for me that lands on Jan 14 and then leaves on Jan 16. However, I'm thinking of moving it to maybe landing on Jan 8 (so I can do both interviews with a single flight) and then leave on Jan 16. Is this a wise move?
