does a Banker need connections prior to succeed?

Student who wants a career in Corporate Banking (IBD). What draws me most is the client facing nature of the work. VP/ED has a very client facing nature, using the Bank’s client list to maintain and strengthen relationships while trying to earn fees/ retain their business. However I know that MDs need to bring in business. Do I need to basically be “elite” (big network of wealthy individuals prior to the job) to succeed in banking? I’m a very social person and my only fear is failing because of not having rich friends/ family members.
