Does getting an email from someone to chat mean its an interview?

Hi all,

I recently had a call with an alumni from my school that emailed me to chat. Nowhere in the email did it say it was an interview. It said he was referred to me by a previous alumni I had spoken to. I was suspicious because I had one other interview where they didn’t mention it was an interview until I asked if it was an interview. Needless to say I thought I did well but got a rejection email 2 hours after the call. This seems like a strange way to go about a first round interview but if that’s how it goes then I guess I will be better prepared next time. 
 

I guess my question is has this happened to anyone else? I can’t find posts about it but it’s happened to me twice.
