Does position preference affect recruitment odds?

I know this is a trivial factor but out of curiosity, does choosing one position as your preference over the other give you a "boost" for that application? Like if a firm allows you to apply to two positions and asks for your preference between the two.

I'm wondering because I prefer one position over the other but I think I have a much better shot at the position I don't prefer.
