Dont Make It Personal
So assuming you get an offer how do you not make it personal when you work for a small company and a small group (4 people) within and your boss tells you he cant afford to lose you. How do you not feel bad knowing it would ruin other peoples lives if you left?
Simple. Ask for severance as a portion of revenue you helped generate ... or worse ... the sloppy seconds of the bonus pool. They need you to keep the churn going dude. No equity/fast promotions ... nothing personal ... just business.
Firstly, I find it hard to believe you'd literally ruin any lives by leaving, even if you're well-liked and extremely valuable to the group - losing that extreme mentality could help. Then, I think the easiest would be to have a sit down with the boss and explain your reasons etc carefully (if you haven't already- might help to explain exactly why you're moving on). Finally, if you're not leaving immediately working to help find your replacement may go down well.
well wasnt trying to be cocky but it actually would, think of it like a pricing desk of 4, the vp just put in his 2 weeks then theres an md an analyst who started 2 months ago and me an associate. The analyst cant price yet normally that takes a few years so if i leave it leaves the md and analyst and no second person on the desk
I accept that you're valuable but I still don't agree that you're invaluable - they could (presumably) hire someone else, quickly, and pay a premium if necessary. Given your info I definitely think offering to help find a replacement could partly smooth the transition
