Don'ts in Interviews
What are interview mistakes that can cost you the job? What are some things you shouldn't do or say in an interview that people mistakenly think are acceptable but actually ruin their chances or hurt them.
For example, you shouldn't answer that your greatest weakness is "working too hard"
Trash talking past employers. Avoid Badmouthing your old bosses or co-workers it's a big red flag for interviewers.
Many check their phone. You should never check your phone during an interview, even if it's just to glance at the time. It's disrespectful and shows a lack of focus on the conversation
Some great advice I got early on was phrasing everything as “running towards, not away”.
You’re excited about this opportunity in front of you, not running away from what you were doing previously. This is general advice but can be drilled into the micro nuances of conversations.
As another commenter stated, don’t bad mouth your previous company. You’re not running away from that place, you’re running towards this new place. You’re not running away from a certain coverage group/ brand/ whatever it is. You’re running towards what you want next.
This applies to any relationship in general. Your workplace is a relationship, albeit more blatantly transactional and colder than a romantic one, but there’s a lot of overlap in terms of framing conversations.
Not being prepared, look at the group, job spec, company, financial statements, your own CV, etc. You’ll most likely be over-prepared but it’ll give you confidence during the interview.
