Is it okay to use em dashes in cover letter or too informal to be used?Also, I submitted an application to a UK bank with a cover letter containing em dashes before later learning that the british prefer spaced en-dashes. Would I be dinged for putting em-dashes that are not considere d correct by the British?

Don't use dashes in formal writing period imo.
They're a stylistic choice, not a necessary one.
I mean "em dash" as opposed to "spaced en dash" in UK
