ESG Analyst

I currently have an FTC offer to join a BlackRock tier AM company as an ESG/Sustainability analyst on the Equities team in London. I won't be doing any fundamental bottom-up valuation, just shit to do with regulations, ESG, proxy voting, etc.

I'll be off to do my postgrad masters next year but if I wanted to recruit for IB/HF - is this experience even valuable/worth it? is it better if I do something like Big 4 Audit/ or Corporate FP&A?

I ask this because it feels like no one values ESG and I don't think it will make me stand out during interviews or CV screening by HR/Analysts.

Also - I have 3 months IB M&A internship experience at an LMM boutique firm from this summer (but clearly, no spot for FT). I tried to get more internships in IB but failed.

Thanks.

I highly recommend that you go for BlackRock! It's a top firm with tons of exit opportunities.

In terms of the role or ESG it's tricky because it is getting a lot of attention for fund managers to invest in etc. Do it for a year, network internally and externally then switch. Your top concern should be to go to the most recognized name brand and as an analyst it's very easy to switch. Problem with big 4 is people look down on their consulting jobs or it seem very reg heavy or to help fix audit issues etc... also the pay is depressing.

I do see the ESG part is fluff but now you see more attention and investments and money flowing to the asset class so best to be ahead of the pack.
