Extending My Junior Year?

Hey guys,

Well, the SA season is just about wrapping up for me. I attend a "semi-target" and of the 13 banks that I applied to (morgan, merrill, deutsche, jefferies, moelis, houlihan, ubs, citi, lehman etc...), I was only granted 4 first round interviews (jefferies, wachovia, moelis & MS). I made it to the 2nd round for Moelis and was dinged and am awaiting response from MS.

I've come to accept the fact that this might not work out how I planned. I decided to pursue banking last summer so my resume unfortunately only has private banking experience (Smith Barney and a small FA service firm). I have also started two successful companies - one of which I took part in a DCF analysis and meeting with private investors to sell equity, but I don't think it's "high finance" enough to be appealing to all the banks. My GPA is 3.79 and I have a relevent major.

Anyway, I'm realizing most of the people who got a majority of the 1st rounds had some sort of high finance expereince in the past (hedge fund, boutique, VC etc...) and I feel that's where I was lacking in my resume. If MS doesn't work out, I will start to look towards other points of entry into the industry -- the most obvious being FT recruiting in the fall.

As an alternative, I've also been presented with the idea of "extending" my Junior year by adding a quarter into my 5th year and stating on my resume that I will be graduating in 2010 instead of 2009. That way I can reapply for the SA season next year after beefing up my resume with some high finance. I also feel I'd have a nice edge over the other prospective candidates seeing how I'll have been through the season once before. I came in contact with a current 4th year who is doing the same thing and has received a large majority of 1st round and 2nd round interviews that didn't work out for her last year. I'm not sure if she's been extended an offer yet.

I know my tech/fit fairly well, and I'm serious about banking but that's never a guarantee for anything. I just don't feel I had a decent run during the season, seeing how I only received a handful of interviews. If I do the SA season again, I doubt I will take part in FT recruiting. I wouldn't want to risk the recruiters remembering me during the SA. Plus, the chances of landing a SA tend to be higher since the firms aren't just trying to fill up their extra spots. The very last resort would be the FT recruiting the fall of my 5th year. I honestly wouldn't mind the extra 2 quarters off either... (school runs on a 3 quarter system instead of 2 semester).

What do you guys think? Have any of you gone this route? It seems like the road less traveled... Any input is appreciated. Please don't flame.

I extended my junior year, I was only able to land an internship in PWM this past summer and I managed to secure a SA position on trading desk for this summer.  It was probably my best and last chance as I now I had 2 finance internships on resume.  I think its a viable option.
