Feedback from interviewer

I'm a 2012 grad, still looking for a job.

I had an interview with a boutique consulting firm the other week, and I thought it went well, but I didn't move on to the final rounds. I asked the interviewer for feedback, and they emailed me back today that they thought "I was more interested in an Asset Management/quantitative" role".

Honestly, my first choice has been IB, and that's what I had been networking for and prepping for the past year, so a lot of my experiences are more finance related. At this point though, I'll take anything that's somewhat relevant to hopefully transfer over in the future, and this firm actually sounded pretty cool.

Is there anything I can say to the interviewer to get him to change his mind? Or is he just being nice? Like could I say something like

"Dear ___

Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback. I apologize if I sounded like I wasn't interested in the role, I want to emphasize that this was definitely an opportunity I really wanted. I understand that decisions are probably already final, but I just wanted to let you know that I do think your firm would be provide the type of opportunity that I am looking for. In either case, it was nice speaking with you, and thanks again for the insight."

Thoughts? Especially from people who have responded to rejected candidates' emails?

Thanks

if its a boutique in your area, maybe you can offer for them to test you out for a month unpaid.

Don't apologize, take that part out. Instead, spin your way back into the game. Something along the lines of "Asset Management is interesting, but during the interview I learned more about the role you are offering and I've been learning more about that job. I'm actually more interested in doing that type of work and would like to be considered for XYZ role."

Consulting->IBD is usually easier than unemployed->IBD

Hm.. I like that. Only thing will that make it seem like I just recently changed interests, and/or trying to save face or anything? But perhaps you are on the right track..

This is just to get you started. Write down an idea, take a walk, clear your head, then come back and look at it, repeat until done. If you're comfortable just speaking plainly and honestly with then, then do so, sometimes that works too....only you really know enough to make the decision.

I mean look, quite frankly, the honest situation is this:

IB is what I've worked towards and where I want to start out. It doesn't look I'm going to be able to start out in IBD, so I'm looking to get some sort of relevant job. I graduate in 3 months, I don't have many options. This company/job sounded pretty cool, and I'd definitely take it.

Thus, I mean anything I can say to show him I am interested in the job. Or its probably too late right...
