Feeling lost after my IB associate stint
After 2.5 years as an investment banking associate, I was hit by mass layoffs at my bank (not performance related). Due to the dead lateral market at the time, I took a role in my coverage industry. I've been there for a year, and while it's not the right fit for me longterm, it's been a good place to ride out the current job market.
Now, I’m exploring my next steps. I enjoyed certain aspects of investment banking, but the hours were rough at times (sweaty group). Part of me is tempted to return to IB since I didn’t leave on my own terms and I miss certain aspects of the job, but now in my 30s, I’m questioning if the long hours are worth it. Corporate roles don’t really excite me, and the comp and progression aren’t great.
What exit opportunities should I consider? Ideally, I’m looking for a role with an average of under 60 hours a week and a total compensation of $200k+ with potential for growth. I enjoyed the client-facing aspects of investment banking and have a strong passion for public markets. I’d prefer to avoid NYC but would be open to it for the right opportunity / comp.
Roles I’ve considered:
-investor relations
-some sort of sales
In the same exact boat and share your interests too. Not interested in anything private markets related.
Would avoid equity research it’s still a grind
Second this(?), Idk. Research is a grind but it's so dependent on your analyst. However as I'm typing this I realize most analysts are working like 12-14 hours a day. So I guess research is actually decent for OP, 60 hours, good money, good opportunity to jump ship in 1.5-2 years if you want to finally jump ship to corporate (my plan).

Sounds like classic ER. A lot of people do an IB analyst/ associate stint and move to ER. Depending on how much they want you, you could come in as VP but likely senior associate.
Then if you’re good you’ll make VP with a few names under coverage in a couple years
How is comp these days at the senior associate and vp levels?
