You won't need any special skills. The rating agencies are regulated by the SEC to have standardized models which they can track for inconsistencies. Analysts maintain their own operating model that works "behind the scenes" and fuels all the assumptions that go into the regulatory model. That said, there's no standardized format.

Just know how to find/fill out an income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows using different sources (earnings presentation, SEC filings, press releases, etc.). Read up on the ratios involved in credit analysis and figure out how to calculate basic growth rates.
