Former Pro Hockey Player Looking For Advice
I played professional hockey in Europe last year but was injured this season and am looking to begin a real career. I graduated from a non-target school with a high GPA in Finance and a boutique IB internship. Any suggestions on how I could begin my career transition and land an analyst role?
network around, and tell them your story. Bankers love athletes, and seeing "professional athlete" on your resume would pretty much check every single box that they're looking for. (besides, hockey's a badass sport). You got this, man. Just apply the tenacity that you had on the ice into your gameplan for IB. Were you a LW?

But also check out Goldman in Boston. I forget who it is but one of the bruins is a PWM there and has absolutely killed it.
There are a SHIT TON of former professional athletes in PWM and Private Funds groups pretty much everywhere. Granted most are former NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL but it makes sense if you think about it. Who else has a natural network/connection with a whole bunch of people with money
Echo the above. To go a little deeper - where did you play hockey in school? Think about your school alumni, especially hockey types. Who were your rivals/other teams in your conference/league? Are you in touch with any of them? Do you remember any of their names? Check them out, facebook, linkedin etc. Don't know them? Get to. Email, call, get the coffee/drink meets etc.
Be upfront. (ie. Dear rival dude, you might not remember but we battled on the ice in college a few years back etc etc. I ended up playing pro in europe, but want to develop a real career. I found your stuff on linkedin and was wondering if I could buy you a coffee/drink to hear about your experience and get some advice?) - or something like that. Doesn't answer? Call and follow up. You can probably choose from a ton of names so go get 'em.

Lots of former athletes in the commercial real estate world, if you're interested in that route.
since athletes are basically unionized, if you go PWM, look into all of that. there should be contacts through your union that can help point you in the right direction.

I think the post you are thinking of was the one I did that was 'a week in the life of' from my minor pro playing days. I posted it in a thread piggybacking off a similar story for a college or minor league baseball player, I believe. I would consider doing a breaking in post but I honestly believe it was mostly luck -- so my advice of 'find a job posting near you that is exactly what you're looking for and cold apply online and get the offer' may not be helpful.
Unless I did a breaking in post and I'm just forgetting it then disregard.
@"CLsnipe" -- I would say at least having an IB internship would put you way ahead of most people in your position. How long did you play professionally? What are you looking at for your next step? Where? Feel free to shoot me a PM if you don't want to respond in the thread, as @"AndyLouis" mentioned I was in a similar situation 2.5 years ago except I had a low GPA and no internships.
