Freshman Internship - Credit Analysis

Background about myself: I recently completed my first year of a three year program finance program and got a freshman internship at a major energy trading firm (think one notch below Vitol, Trafigura etc).

Now the problem is that they have alllocated me in the credit team. I have written credit reviews for companies they are looking into investing in. Most of the work has been qualitative with the most quant aspect being comparing industry metrics. While I am grateful for the opportunity, I haven't really learned anything new and feel like I'm writing a uni accounting 101 coursework assignment.

How can I leverage this internship to break IB? Perhaps a shift in department if I spoke to someone in the firm about it?

Doesn't seem like a bad position for your first internship. Maybe you can see if they need you to model any of the companies that you are working on? You could always offer to help people in other departments when you have down time.
