Full time recruitment timelines IB
Hi wso users,
I'm a rising junior who is currently doing an internship in corp fin, and I go to a semi target. I'm reaching out hoping you guys can answer a couple questions for me.
What is the recruitment timeline for IB recruiting for students graduating next spring?
Do mm banks(think keybank, raymond james, truist) have structured recruiting? it seems like there job postings are all over the place.
what are big 4 valuation, and commercial banking recruitment timelines? I'm thinking of using these as a backup incase I dont get any ib offers.
Is it possible to make a jump to mm bank from valuations or cb after about a year of experience?
thanks
FT recruiting happens immediately after internships end, up until maybe early October to fill any laggard spots. You need to start networking around week 2 or 3 of your internship. These jobs are rarely posted online since it happens so quickly, FT recruiting is mostly through networking.
MM banks will usually recruit in the same timing as above - BB/EB interns who don't get return offers will often head to a MM
The other timelines will be a bit later, corporate banking may hire through the fall as well for another option. I'd do corporate banking as backup #1, then commercial banking - internal transfers are much easier, and either of these is doable. Big 4 valuations has a transferable skillset (modeling heavy) but for whatever reason I see very few laterals come through from that seat.
MMs have coffee chat style networking sessions often at my school. I will have to make sure to attend every single one of those.
thanks
If you see any in the fall definitely attend - but the bulk of FT recruiting happens before school starts, and you need to have a number of people vouching for you / communicating deadlines to you before your internship even ends. You need to network on your own independent of your school, and network hard - at least 40-50 phone calls throughout the summer if you're casting a wide net, IMO. Good news is you'll have plenty of time to do these in a corp fin internship.
Is this fine to do with the same firm trying to move into a different line of business? Or will this hurt your FT offer if your manager finds out you are trying to lateral out.
depends on the firm, tread carefully. If you're somewhere that promotes internal moves a lot, do it quietly. if your firm is anti-internal move (GS, BX for example) would focus your efforts externally. definitely be quiet about it either way
Yeah I will definitely have time. I have learned quickly why people say corp fin is boring. I have some connections to the M&A team through winning an acquisition pitch at my college. Im thinking I should reach out and ask for work from them.
