Gap period before master's
I was accepted into a continental European target for a master’s (Bocconi/HEC/HSG). I finished my bachelor’s this semester, but the program won’t start until the second half of next year.
Internships are extremely hard to come by in my country (even non-relevant ones), and I’m not sure I’ll be able to land one during the gap. If that happens, is the gap excusable in the eyes of potential employers if I dedicate myself to learning the local language of the school’s country to a reasonably decent level and give that as a sort of justification for the gap?
Dedicating your gap period to learning the local language of the country where your master’s program is located can be a strategic and justifiable move in the eyes of potential employers. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s why and how you can position this effectively:
Value of Language Skills: Employers often value candidates who demonstrate adaptability and cultural integration, especially in international settings. Learning the local language shows initiative, commitment, and a willingness to immerse yourself in the local culture, which can be a significant asset for roles requiring cross-border collaboration.
Framing the Gap: When explaining the gap in interviews or on your CV, emphasize that you used the time productively to acquire a skill that aligns with your future academic and professional goals. For example, you could say:
"I dedicated this period to achieving proficiency in [language], which I believe will enhance my ability to engage with local professionals, excel in my master’s program, and contribute effectively in a global work environment."
Supplement with Other Activities: If internships are hard to come by, consider supplementing your language learning with other activities that demonstrate personal growth or skill development. For instance:
Employers’ Perspective: Gaps are generally excusable if they are used productively. Employers are more likely to view this positively if you can articulate how the experience has prepared you for your master’s program and future career.
Practical Tips:
In summary, using your gap to learn the local language is not only excusable but can also be a differentiator if framed correctly. Pair it with other small initiatives to show a well-rounded use of your time, and you’ll be in a strong position to explain this period to future employers.
