Gap Year (military transition)

I'm currently in the Army (Ranger) and I'll soon be separating from the military. I am enlisted, but graduated with a degree in finance from a BigTen school. I am looking to enroll in an MBA program (UVA, UNC, Duke, or Georgetown) in 2018. I was extended on my last deployment and did not have any time to study for the GMAT. I was wondering what I should do in my gap year to best position myself for MBA program applications. I feel like my education is now obsolete- I've applied, but gotten only tepid responses from firms in high finance and federal consulting. Would Capitol Hill experience be beneficial? I've gotten much better responses for staffer/legislative assistant positions on The Hill. With my military background I am also considering positions at the VA or Federal Reserve. Are there any other veterans out there that needed a year or two before business school? I need a full year of quality work experience that will add to, not dilute my resume. Thanks in advance for your responses.
