Get me out of Ops!

All,

I graduated May 2012 with a 3.6 gpa earning a bachelor of science degree in Economics. I didn't go to an ivy league but my school isn't thay badly ranked either. I got my first job out of college in the wealth mgmt operations department of a big bank in NY and it's almost been a year that I work there but want to make a move out of ops before it's too late. What would you suggest to get my foot out-the-door to a more front office position? Thanks!

Get YOU out of ops. Start thinking along those lines. This topic is thoroughly covered here, show some initiative and use the search function.

It's doable, but you have to make the effort and be smart. My advice: network. Anything is possible if you know the right people.

Investment performance reporting (basically reconciling accounts and preparing reports for financial advisors). I know the transition to Ib is merely impossible but was thinking about buy-side research? Of course i am keeping an open mind to other options ...

figure out what buy side research departments are looking for, then try to make your self attractive by tailoring yourself towards that.

CFA lvl 1 is a good start.

why don't you try for PB/WM? are you able to network with the PWM guys at all? I took an ops internship this past summer, was hesitant at first but turned out great because I ended up in an MO role on the trading floor. was able to build good relationships for the traders we supported, who can vouch for me once FT recruiting rolls around (I intend to apply to boutique IBs instead of taking the return offer for ops).

Actually, if you're just a year in, get a masters in finance and hit the reset button on recruiting. This is perhaps the most straightforward means. check out user 'cries', they did this and are pretty good at guiding people
