Getting into finance as a non-target graduate (UK)

I noticed that this site contains info that is predominantly from the USA, but as a recent graduate in the UK, I would like to hear some more insight about the UK finance scene. I assume that some of the dynamics (importance of target vs non-target, WLB etc) are likely different between the USA and the UK, so I thought I’d make a post to seek advice/info specifically about the UK finance sector.

I’ve recently graduated with a STEM degree (not finance related) from a non-target in the UK. I do have 1 internship in PE under by belt (6 weeks over the summer), plus some basic level jobs (supermarkets etc) during university, but that really is about it in terms of professional experience.

I find that getting into the finance industry is tough, and it appears that those from target/semi-target are prioritised. This, combined with the very tough job market in the UK right now, is making it difficult to break in.

I’d like to get into IB specifically, and hopefully PE later in the future, but does anyone have any advice on how to actually get in considering non-target background in the UK? I assume that once you have 2-3 internships under your belt, or even better a graduate scheme, it should be much easier from there?

Thanks.

Big 4 and ACA route into IB is the best shot you got. Bit delayed but I think its 100% worth it.

With little previous IB experience its unlikely FT recruiting or off-cycles will be successful.

If you want to do IB - then don't settle for an irrelevant grad scheme like Lloyds commercial banking - unlikely any road into IB afterwards without a masters/MBA
