Ghosted By Mentor

I was accepted into a BB diversity event that goes in-person in January and assigned a mentor to meet with before the event for advice and mock interviews. However, I haven’t heard from him despite multiple emails and following up with HR (who had me CC the recruiter on my last attempt). Still no response.

I go to a non-target, so this mentorship is important for me, my cold email hit rate on this bank specifically is awful. Past participants said their mentors were critical to getting their SA offers. Should I ask HR for a new mentor or keep waiting on him (it's been over 6 weeks)? I understand he is extremely busy and don’t want to be pushy. Advice?

I would wait. The event is in January. He could be filing your emails away to respond later this month when he has more time. Likely super busy and taking any free time he has to spend with his family. When you’re a candidate it can seem easy to take the five minutes to respond to an email, but realistically he knows he can’t really do anything for you right now that wouldn’t create more work on his part. Sit tight and he might be helpful during the program. If you come across well, maybe he’ll be helpful after. You need to make sure your impression is overwhelmingly “this kid won’t reflect badly on me if I support him”. He has a lot of competing priorities and you could imagine that helping out on recruiting is pretty low around the holidays. Best of luck and don’t rest your entire career on one person who was assigned to you. You need to seek out good mentors who see themselves in you and genuinely want to help you out. Might not be this guy.
