Goal to move from billing management fees to a portolio analyst

Need quick advise. I currently work for a very large bond manager in the management fee billing area. I passed the level 1 CFA exam and will be taking level 2 in 30 days. My ultimate goal is to be an analyst in the investment group, but currently do not have a way into the group. Is it acceptable for me to reach out to various analysts or the department heads and see about sitting with various analysts to learn and network? If not what are some other ways that one can get pushed into the investment management team?

Thanks for your help in advance!

My vote is attend some of their team investment meetings and meet some of the analysts. Go as many times as you can, and once you get to know one or two, see if you can help out on a project or simply bring good ideas into the meeting. Once you know a few analysts and potentially sit for 'informational interviews' I would bring it up with your manager about wanting to move and see if he will introduce you to the investment team manager. If so, when you meet with the investment team manager he will already recognize you from meetings and you can mention you sat with a number of his analysts and contributed on xyz project. If your current manager will not introduce you, I would reach out to the investment manager yourself, ask for a brief introductory meeting, and mention all the meeting with analysts and work you have already done for him / her. Casually slip the CFA work in, follow up after the exam and say how you did and see if there are any open opportunities or if he/she has the chance to talk with you about your future career goals. If you really impress them, they might put you in touch with their contacts outside the company as well

Def take iniative. I also also work for a large AM firm in a role that while related to research is still not quite. I befriended one of our younger and friendlier analysts over the last few months about something we had in common. In a few of our conversations, i had expressed to him my long term interests and long story short, i recently sent him a msg explaining my situation, what im doing, what i want to be doing and he agreed to have me shadow him even for an hour a week before I leave for B-school in the fall.
