Going to IB/PE from Consulting

Graduated last May and been working at large consulting firm for ~10 months doing a good amount of transaction advisory consulting. Realized IB / PE is what I want to do but obviously missed the boat on IB out of undergrad. Currently debating applying to MBA in the fall vs. trying to find an IB/PE job. Had a MM PE firm offer me an internship post grad but took the full time consulting job instead. Curious to see if anyone has successfully made the jump to finance from consulting / any advice out there. Thanks guys

I made the switch from consulting to IB at an EB to large cap PE. My thoughts: better to make the switch sooner rather than later if possible (makes the story easier). Start networking/talking to headhunters now because openings will start once analysts leave after getting their bonus. I do not recommend an MBA if you want to get into PE. Just get into an IB analyst program and recruit for PE.

I did classic networking (LinkedIn, college alumni, etc.) but I also used some headhunters. I would say to start now because bonuses have probably been paid out and it’s before the new analyst class starts, but always just keep your ear to the ground because lateral openings are ad hoc. As for age, it’s tough to say, but from what I’ve seen, joining an IB analyst program laterally before 30 generally doesn’t raise eyebrows.

Which headhunters did ya use? Selby ?

Could you say when this was roughly (eg was it a rough ib market like today or was it something better ?)

Have ya seen ppl with closer to 2 years of MBB go to IB and then PE successfully ?
