GPA vs Job experinece Need Advice

Im 18 and currently a freshman at a non-target school. (plan on moving in a year or so.) Currently i have the opportunity to work full time (40 hours) at a high end retail store with some managerial experience. But i feel as though it may slightly hold back my grades while in school. When apply for internships do comanies like a high GPA lets say 3.75 - 4.0 or do they prefer a godd GPA 3.4 - 3.7 with work experience?

Maybe retail store experience won't shield you that much from a lower GPA, but if you had a boutique I-Banking internship and 3.5 because you're working long hours within the industry.

I think the transferable skills are what companies are really after, so doing an I-Banking internship (if you want IBD) would help you out much more with a lower GPA than a retail store.

In the end, most companies would take someone with a 3.4 and a bunch of relevant experience over someone with a 3.9 and 0 experience any day.

Or just bust your butt and do the 40+ hour work week and get a 3.75-4.0! Now that would look even better to the recruiters eyes.

Who knows, maybe even if you get some loyal clientele from that job, you could network a job out of it.

This is actually a valid point. Friend of mine was a customer assistant in one of the Saville row tailors and met CEOs daily. One of them took an interest in him and got him a job after graduating.

Don't overload yourself brah. I had a GPA coming out of my freshman year and I still landed a FO MM internship.

It doesn't sound like you'll learn anything at the retail job that can be a value add for ibanking or whatever you're aiming for - I'd skip it.

This is your freshman year bro. Pledge a fraternity, do a lot of drugs, party hard and smash sloots.Just keep your GPA above a 3.5 if you can and you'll be solid. You're already ahead of the majority of freshmen by thinking that far ahead.

If you're dead set on getting some sort of experience during the semester see if you can find any unpaid roles with your finance department, or see if your business school offers anything.
