Depressed

Only one week into my internship in corporate banking and I’m already so depressed.

been dreading this summer ever since I accepted my offer (which I only accepted due to pressure from my parents—I’m a first gen low income kid so it was a pretty big deal to them) and I already feel like my life is over.

I do not feel intellectually stimulated by the training and my team is known to not give any deal work to summer analysts. On top of everyone there being so rude.

i never wanted to go into corporate banking in the first place and I feel like I’m stuck. I know I won’t return to my current firm. With this corporate banking background, I also won’t be able to recruit for either IB or the buy-side for full time (+ I do not go to a target school).
I feel like my life is over and I am just so fucking depressed and I don’t know what the point in life anymore

You need to go seek some therapy. Life is just starting and there is no reason you should be feeling like this. This may sound harsh, but you need to grow up a little bit. You came from a low income background, try to see the good that is in this situation. Figure out some other career path if this isn't your thing and tell your family you felt pressured, but it's not for you in the end. Not everyone is going to land the top 1% jobs out there and that's fine. You'll still make a great living!

This is the wrong mentality. Find what you enjoy what you see long term and work towards it. Try to do your best in the present moment, if you can’t execute in the present you will never be able to perform regardless of the situation.

Hit the gym , get some hobbies, your world view is way too restricted. Read the book psycho cybernetics…

Play the best move on the chess board and play infinite games. You will be ahead of most.

Even the guys at top mega funds are under pressure to find the next best thing or don’t think they are living up to their potential. It never leaves you no matter the heights so just make sure you know how to dance with the rhythm and you try to tune the music of your subconscious for success.

It’s sad that many kids somehow are tuned into this frequency that it’s IB or I’m worthless… come on man you are a very powerful human being.

The depression is clouding your judgement and not allowing you to see and appreciate the position you’re in. If you do well in this internship and get the offer, you can still get any job you want, will just be less linear and may take a bit longer.

I’m wrapping up my analyst stint in Corporate Banking and I’ve seen every exit from my team. IB, PE, PC, CD, etc. Saw your previous posts and you’re in a great spot. You’ll easily get looks from IB to lateral or LMM PE if you really want. Your interests might also change after you start working full time. Many of my colleagues, myself included, used to want to do IB but we lost all interest in IB/PE once we got a taste of banking and realized CB/Credit is where it’s at.

My advice: get an offer, build your network, then reevaluate after 6/12 months.

Before you say that your life is over, consider this. Yeah, you felt pressured to do the internship, which is understandable. And yeah, the internship might suck. Guess what though, some people have trouble getting internships, or getting into college at all. Some people don’t even finish high school. I know people make these comparisons all the time; and I know that many people such as myself have high standards, and aren’t even thinking about these facts.

This is still a solid internship. Honestly, just because you go to a “non target”, and just because this internship isn’t an IB, doesn’t mean you could never break into IB. Investment banking itself will have its own ups and downs anyway, particularly in the analyst years, which can suck.

You can easily leverage this internship into high finance positions, even if it isn’t IB. Asset/wealth management, private banking, hedge funds, equity research, back/middle office or whatever you wanna call supporting positions (very important as well).

Teach yourself skills to help you succeed in high finance as well, do not just rely on school or internships, doing so will better prepare you for interviews. Our generation has so much access to internet/AI resources, which are full of relevant information. Do not ever let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do for a career.
