Networking: Linkedin vs Cold emails

Hi, just wanted to ask if it's better to network using Linkedin messages or cold emails. Right now I've received exactly 0 answers (+60 sent) on cold emails and 3 (+90) on Linkedin messages sent. Is Linkedin better or do i just write really bad messages (I generally write something along these lines "Hi ...., my name is ... and I am a ... University student passionate about the field of Investment Banking, I found your profile very interesting and I would be grateful if you could dedicate a few minutes of your time to tell me about jour journey when it is most convenient for you" Should I add something about the bank they work at (I only sent messages to people from my same Uni)?

Thank you in advance for the advise

IB always email. Other industries might be more receptive to LinkedIn but ur chances to succeed using LinkedIn is much lower than an email

"I found your profile very interesting"

What about it is interesting? If someone sent you this message would you respond? No because it's way too generic and shows you aren't actually interested in the person, their company, or job.

Cold emailed and believe my response rate was in upper 50-60%. I think best way to go about this, as others said, is to personalize it and be strategic about who and when you are in reaching out.

It depends- each bank has different processes in general, some prefer more networking than others. Some BBs will have a dedicated alumni teams, and others may send your resume to a general pile. I would say that if there is a number of alumni at the firm looking at your resume, better to go A2A2VP2MD etc, and chances are people will help make the intro. If there isn’t a specific “process” the rest of the kids are following, then maybe best bet to reach out to whoever seems most similar to yourself. I.e. they speak your language (if not American), they grew up in the same area & went to the same high school, they also played football at your uni, etc.

I networked into ib, hf, and pe internships. Hypothetically if LinkedIn is 40% hit rate and email is 30% does that mean you forgo emailing? No, you do both so you get a chance with 40% and another with 30%. Also personalize is the way to do it. I’ve had a high response rate but I tried coming up with a real good reason to reach out every time. Mind you these ppl have 50 other people reaching out with the same c&p message, I’ve seen it. No reason they want to respond if you send the same thing.
