Graduated with my B.S. Economics on Friday, but have no relevant job yet. What should I do?
I am searching for jobs in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami and remotely, and my cumulative GPA is 3.13. I transferred in fall 2020 from a community college in NY w/ an AS Business Administration to a large public non-target in FL, and I just graduated. If I don't find a job relatively soon, I'll likely have to move back home to NY w/ my family. The winters are terrible there, I don't have friends there, and the town doesn't have much to do. I can't fail on this job search.
I've applied for 100+ (lost count) finance, analytics, supply chain, etc. positions this semester and have had a lot of phone interviews, mostly with small local companies and recruiters. I've been vigorously networking with key people at large companies in Central/South FL, and one director of revenue management is forwarding my resume to a recruiter. The former president of the economics club is referring me to a financial analyst position at his company. I've been improving my interview skills as well, as I'm working on my likability, eye contact, and positivity.
I want to apply to financial analyst roles at larger companies, because I notice that the small companies I interview with operate like startups. These companies want someone who is expected to work more than a standard 9-5, yet they don't pay much for it. Larger companies are more competitive, and I usually only get contacted by or get interviews with smaller local companies with terrible work-life balance and/or mediocre wages. My only edge is that I'm neurodivergent, so I could apply to disability hiring programs.
How can I start getting offers with companies that have WLB? It's so hard to stand out among hundreds of applicants. I customize my resume and cover letter for each role, but I am not seeing any results. I don't want to leave the FL market because it's paradise here. But the reality is that the private sector here is oriented around theme parks and beaches and not so much on finance and software. Should I suck it up and move somewhere like Phoenix or LA, or try looking for competitive remote jobs? I'm so lost and running out of time.
Hey man - Have some advice & perspective here. My sister's best friend just graduated from UMiami Friday so assuming you went there for the sake of this because that's a non-target as well. I say the following with the utmost respect so please don't view it as any different. I hope you land something because your writing style is evident that you are in deep waters right now:
There are really three components here that are actively working against you for no other purpose than your own doing: low gpa, no internships, no time. 3.13 is horrendous. You have unequivocally destroyed your prospects based on this alone. 3.3-3.4 is the base. 3.13 is an actual deterrent. High GPA means nothing to employers but a low one will. Where are your internships? Where was your internship this past summer that would lead to FT? But the one killing you the most is time. Straight up you should have been thinking about this years ago. For banking I started grabbing internships my 2nd month into school as a freshman. You have no time in a jobs market about to tip over into 08 adjacent territory. With all 3 of these factors, you cannot blame anyone or point the finger. By and large you will likely end up with a job that is underpaid that you hate with no mobility.
Now that you understand what's likely to happen - let's focus on the positive. Where are these phone interviews going? I get 10 emails a week from F500 companies from a profile I set up sophomore year looking for people. Get on a dozen sites and email endlessly. You said you want to be in financial analyst roles at larger companies. Most likely that's not going to happen given your background/current stats. A smaller company is more realistic. But then you start asking about WLB. Dude, you're whole life is balanced. You've been asleep at the wheel for the past 4 years with a 3.13. Toughen up and understand it's going to be quiet for you for a few years and just get what you can. My advice would be to scour headhunter sites and small small companies. It won't be pretty but this is the way.
