Great, unorthodox interview questions
As a jun, I was once asked by an interviewer to run me through the business model of a Mexican drug cartel. Initially, the question took me aback, but I was able to lay out the overall structure from common sense, while showcasing my overall understanding of economics and business processes. I got an offer.
Afterwards, it became my go-to question when I was in the interviewer chair. It really allows me to gauge the business sense of a candidate, while breaking the ice and seeing whether the candidate has a sense of humor.
What are some good interview questions that you have heard throughout the years which seem unorthodox, but actually allow you to effectively evaluate a potential candidate for a role?
What’s a book you’ve read lately? If they can talk about anything, they’re good. Bonus points if it’s interesting or ties to something they care about. If they say they don’t read at all it’s a ding. Even if you don’t read or are too busy to read, you should be able to come up with something on the fly.
Got asked to persuade someone to work in consulting instead of IB in an IB superday.
Solid question because it really tests a candidates motivations and understanding of the role
