High School Junior Advice

HS junior here, and I’m looking for advice on good EC’s to pursue and develop in the last 8 months. I take the SAT in March, and I’m estimating about a 1550, and I have a 4.0 gpa with 4 aps this year. My current EC’s are solid, but I’m looking for something(s) that will put me over the top.

damn bro good on you for gettting a head start. I didn't even what banking was as a HS junior. Honestly, do EC's really matter THAT much? if you get a high SAT, GPA and already have great EC's you should be good. If anything maybe start a business or something that you can build out over the next couple of months.

it's funny that they care about ECs when grooming you to be a robot

I’m in this exact same situation. I’be been looking for some creative EC’s too, my grades and scores are already solid.

You could sign up for a sport.

i have all of the basic ecs, like i work, i volunteer, i play a varsity sport, i'm in clubs, i have leadership position in those clubs, yet I feel like I need something more impressive. Im not even trying to go to a top school either, just something like BC

yeah my freshamn was a 3.89 i think, sophmore dropped down to a 3.77 because of some pretty bad family stuff during Q2, and i have a 4.0 this year so far with 4 ap classes.

Build a strong, cohesive narrative through community service/volunteering. For inspiration, look at the volunteering that HYPS students have done.

If you want to guarantee acceptance into a strong school and be a super hardo, score in the top 1% for both the SAT & ACT. Pretty much everyone that has done that  and has a very good GPA gets admitted into a top 15 school. Atleast, my brother did (Northwestern). Things worked out for me too

Source: go to a semi-target (Cornell/Duke).

If you do get a 1550 that's great, anything 1530+ is about as good as you can do as far as even the most selective universities are concerned. Since you've got a while until you have to apply, consider taking the SAT multiple times. Different iterations of the exam can vary in difficulty slightly, and if that makes the difference between 1500 and 1550 because of an unfair question it's worth it to retake.

Since you're very well prepared you must know by now that selective universities really like you to have a "spike," an area in your application that is unique and exceptionally strong. It's better to have a spike and a weakness elsewhere than to be a strong well-rounded candidate---not that having no weak point is a bad thing.

Your spike is not something anyone here can help you with, because it needs to be something you're actually exceptionally good at and passionate about. Landing an internship with a named organization related to your intended major or to something you talk about in your admission essay could be good. If you don't have a particular passion yet, interning for someone in government, e.g. state representative, is a safe bet. Remember, you're trying to appeal to faculty and admin staff with college admissions, not applying for a job. Best of luck, and try to have some fun; life never gets easier than senior year of high school.

Lose your virginity

Editing this because it sounds harsh. I knew a guy like you growing up. He went to HYP undergrad -> HY Law -> BigLaw and now his only regret is not letting loose more growing up.

True rockstars will crush their career / academic goals while also having a vibrant social life. I think you should set some “social” goals, one of which could be hooking up with a girl.

I think learning to handle rejection is an important part of growing up too - maybe make the goal to hook up with your crush or at minimum get rejected at some point in the process

I'm gonna take the contrarian side of this argument. First and foremost, have fun for sure. You're young, so don't take life too seriously-- you'll have plenty of time for that later, but hopefully never.

With that being said, keep your eyes on the mothafuckin' prize. If I knew all the things I know today when I was your age, I would probably be CEO of a F500 company (ok, maybe a slight exaggeration).

I worked hard when I was younger and USED to wish I partied more. But when girls hear that I'm Ivy educated and work in IB, literally on Wall Street, panties drop instantly (not an exaggeration). I don't have qualms anymore about forgoing some poon back then for unlimited (and much higher quality) poon now. I hook up with straight up freaks, the cute/nerdy type, fancy professionals, and artsy ones. Still trying to decide which is my fav, but haven't come across a wifey type yet.

For what it's worth, a couple years ago, I hooked up with my high school class's prom queen. We never talked back in the day (was geeky, no balls), but we hit it off, figuratively and literally, a few days after our class reunion.

Oh and the prom king? He's general manager of the local Planet Fitness. Despite the generous discount he offered the class, I think I'll stick to Equinox. No offense to PF though.

OP, this post is a perfect example of how you will end up if you focus 100% on academics and IB. You will be in your 30s and still have a massive chip on your shoulder due to your lack of social / sexual experience during your HS and College years.

Save yourself... before you start bragging about hooking up with the prom queen 15 years after high school!!!
