Houlihan Capital Valuation Advisory - Thoughts?

Looking for some career advice.

I currently work for a public accounting firm in their valuation practice. Here, I do all sorts of valuations, such as purchase price allocations (PPA), portfolio company valuations, 409a/ASC 718 stock compensation, goodwill impairment, etc. There is a large amount of audit assist work, where I review other firm's work for regulatory purposes as well as external work where we do it all independently ourselves and, in turn, are subject to audits by other firms.

I stumbled upon Houlihan Capital, not to be confused with Houlihan Lokey. Basically, the founder came from Lokey, but Capital is doing its own thing and is unrelated to Lokey. Capital has a boutique IB arm and a Valuation Advisory arm. The Valuation Advisory arm has openings that I am pursuing. This firm does not do audit assists. They primarily do independent valuations in all the categories I mentioned in the above paragraph in addition to crypto, SPAC, and transaction fairness opinions. Seems like a great way to level up my skills and gain more exposure.

Pay is going to hit $100k all in. This doesn't count a new ESOP they will be implementing. My current role with my estimated raise coming soon is probably around $85k all in. My ultimate aspirations are to transition to IB/PE/PC/HF. Perhaps ER too lol.

My questions are how prestigious is Houlihan Capital (again, separate from Houlihan Lokey) in 2024? The firm seems to be growing rapidly. Should I pursue this role and will it help boost my resume/network in a way that I can pursue my ultimate aspirations? Specifically IB/PE/PC?

Thanks in advance for any help here!

Houlihan Capital Valuation Advisory - Career Considerations

  1. Current Role vs. Houlihan Capital:

    • Current Role: You are gaining a broad range of valuation experience, including purchase price allocations (PPA), portfolio company valuations, 409a/ASC 718 stock compensation, goodwill impairment, and audit assist work.
    • Houlihan Capital: Offers a similar range of valuation services but without audit assist work. They also provide exposure to crypto, SPAC, and transaction fairness opinions, which could be valuable for expanding your skill set.
  2. Compensation:

    • Current Role: Estimated to be around $85k all in after your upcoming raise.
    • Houlihan Capital: Offers $100k all in, plus the potential for additional benefits from a new ESOP.
  3. Prestige and Growth:

    • Houlihan Capital: While it is separate from Houlihan Lokey, it appears to be growing rapidly. The founder's background from Houlihan Lokey might lend some credibility, but it is essential to research further into the firm's reputation and client base.
  4. Career Aspirations:

    • Transition to IB/PE/PC/HF: The experience at Houlihan Capital could be beneficial, especially with the added exposure to crypto, SPAC, and transaction fairness opinions. These areas are increasingly relevant in the finance industry.
    • Resume and Network: Working at a growing firm like Houlihan Capital could enhance your resume and expand your professional network, which is crucial for transitioning to investment banking (IB), private equity (PE), portfolio companies (PC), or hedge funds (HF).

Recommendations

  • Research: Conduct thorough research on Houlihan Capital's reputation, client base, and recent deals. Look for any industry recognition or notable transactions that could add prestige to your resume.
  • Network: Leverage LinkedIn and other professional networks to connect with current or former employees of Houlihan Capital. Their insights can provide a clearer picture of the firm's work environment and growth prospects.
  • Skill Development: Consider how the additional exposure to crypto, SPAC, and transaction fairness opinions at Houlihan Capital aligns with your long-term career goals. These skills could be highly valuable in the evolving finance landscape.

Conclusion

Pursuing a role at Houlihan Capital could be a strategic move to enhance your skills and potentially boost your resume for future opportunities in IB, PE, PC, or HF. However, ensure you conduct thorough research and networking to confirm the firm's reputation and growth trajectory.
