Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about recruiting during the summer:

  1. Recruiting Timeline:

    • Recruiting typically happens from late summer through the end of fall. Some firms, like Vista and Warburg, may have processes that start during the summer.
  2. Staying in the Process:

    • To stay in the recruiting process, it's crucial to be proactive and prepared. Networking is key. Reach out to every single person in your network at every bank in every city. This can help you secure a full-time offer even before knowing if you have a return offer from your current bank.
  3. Hedging Your Outcomes:

    • If you anticipate not getting a return offer from your current bank, it is smart to start recruiting during the summer. This proactive approach can sometimes lead to securing a position at a "better" firm.
  4. Concerns About Other Firms:

    • While it is not recommended to lie about your return offer, you can attribute the lack of a return offer to market conditions if asked. This is a common and understandable reason.
  5. Emotional and Strategic Preparation:

    • Allow yourself a day or two to feel upset if you don't get a return offer. Then, reflect and make a plan of action. Being prepared and proactive can significantly improve your chances of landing a full-time position.
  6. Practical Tips:

    • Make sure to network extensively and reach out to contacts at various firms.
    • Be honest but strategic about your situation if asked why you didn't get a return offer.
    • Use the summer to prepare and apply to multiple firms to hedge your bets.
