How do to ask for a referral

How do you ask for a referral after you have networked with a person on zoom and they told you to let them know if there was any job you were interested in at the company?

We only talk on LinkedIn so i am not sure how to approach this.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a structured approach to asking for a referral after you've had a networking session on Zoom and the person has indicated openness to helping you with job opportunities at their company:

  1. Express Gratitude: Start your message by thanking them for their time and the insightful conversation you had. Mention something specific from the conversation to personalize your message and show that you were genuinely engaged.

  2. Reiterate Interest: Clearly state your interest in the company and, if applicable, mention a specific role or department you are interested in. This shows that you've done your homework and are serious about opportunities at their company.

  3. Formal Request for Referral: Politely ask if they would be comfortable referring you for the position you are interested in. Make it easy for them by offering to provide any additional information they might need, such as your resume or a cover letter.

  4. LinkedIn Specifics: Since your communication has been through LinkedIn, ensure your message is concise and professional. LinkedIn messages tend to be shorter, so get to the point quickly while still being polite and professional.

  5. Follow-Up: If you don't hear back within a week or so, it's appropriate to send a polite follow-up message. People are busy, and a gentle reminder can sometimes be helpful.

Here's a sample message based on the above steps:

Subject: Following Up on Our Recent Conversation

Dear Name,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my gratitude once again for the insightful conversation we had about [specific topic] on Zoom. It was incredibly enlightening to learn about [specific detail from the conversation], and it has further solidified my interest in [Company Name].

As mentioned during our chat, I am very interested in exploring opportunities within [specific department/role] at [Company Name]. If you feel comfortable, I would greatly appreciate it if you could refer me to any openings within this area. I am more than happy to provide any additional information you might need, such as my resume or specific details about my interest and qualifications for the role.

Thank you once again for your time and consideration. I look forward to potentially working together in the future.

Best regards, [Your Name]

Remember, the key is to be respectful, concise, and clear about your request. Good luck!
