How does getting Series 79 and 63 work for lateral analyst?

I'm lateraling in as an associate to coverage from loan syndication at a strong balance sheet bank and my current team don't require series 79 and 63. How does the process for licensing work for lateral associates? How do people study for the licensing while on the job? Do you just do nothing but get license for the initial 2 months?

Joined as a lateral analyst to my current group at a MM, came from a TAS-focused background. To answer a couple of questions on this thread in one response:

  • Yes, the exams you take vary based on the role you're going into. Traditionally, you take the SIE, S63, and S79. Believe cap markets has to take the S7 in addition to the others, but not entirely sure
  • The first 1-2 months on the desk is more of a slow period, as your team knows you're ramping up. I wasn't doing much heavy lifting on decks / models, but rather understanding the broader infrastructure. Honestly had about 2-3 hours a day where I could dedicate to studying, which allowed me to be comfortably prepared for the exams
