I'm a plebian so there's no chance I'll be getting into IB right off the bat. I am dropping out of law school, though not because my grades are bad so that helps a bit. (top 15% or so but at a tier 2) I found a real-estate investment analysis position that seems like it would be interesting. I have also been looking for credit analyst positions. I spent a year working for an investment bank in BO before I went to law school; I don't want to go back to that.
So, is real-estate any good? Credit analysis? What's a good way (type of job) to get financial analysis experience before heading to an MBA?
I intend to learn some coding this year from the free sites for it if that makes a difference. Maybe study for the CFA, definitely for GMAT; I've already started.
Real estate is great, but I wouldn't go into it as a stop gap, even if you could get hired for that. Real estate interviews are very much about fit and "does this person actually want to do real estate?"
If you're doing well why not stick it out at law school first? If you like RE, law backgrounds are very popular in the field and getting an MBA might not be worth it especially if you're good already with numbers and have some analytical experience. What level schools are you looking at for an MBA anyways?
I'm not particularly interested in real-estate that I know of. (Never had any experience in it though, but I do worry about it being cyclical) I wouldn't go unless I got a top-20 MBA. I had a 3.6 undergrad in accounting, so my GPA is decent enough. I will just need to get a good GMAT, and I need a good work experience. The problem with sticking out a law degree is the uncertainty of what you're speaking of. There are certainly possibilities of getting into what you're talking about with a law degree. One thing I have looked at is restructuring. The problem is that I am at a tier 2 school that has no pull where that work is done. I could transfer, but then I would paying sticker price for two years which with COL is 150gs. This wouldn't even guarantee I would get a spot. If I got stuck as a lawyer, I would be worried about the lack of flexibility as to where you can live.
I really just need a better work experience to put on the resume for an MBA than what I have in the mean time. Legal clerk at a government agency.
Also, an MBA and a law degree would take the same amount of time at this point. I get your skepticism as I have heard it from everyone around me, but I've wrestled with wanting to quit since the day I started law school, and I don't really want to add debt at the rate I am while that's the case. I might end up deciding to do a jd/mba program as some of the CALI schools offer scholarships to transfers. But the plan as of now is just an MBA.
