How does the recruiting process work?

I'm sure the process varies bank by bank and amid coronavirus, it's definitely different than usual I presume. This post is going to be questions on top of questions that I have regarding the process.

From what I believe, the process starts from:
HR -> Analysts & Associates (first rounds) -> VPs (superdays) -> MDs

First question, when you are applying to a bank. Is the first round of resume weeding through HR? So does this mean that the analysts and associates you have spoken with have no say here?

Second question, When it gets to the Analysts/Associates. How many of them get to see your resume? Does everyone get to see each resume by passing it around?

Last Question, if I only spoke to an MD and a VP (which was referred by the MD). Does this mean that they probably won't even get to see my resume if I never talked with any analysts or associates? (Not passing the first round)?

I apologize ahead of time if these are dumb questions. I am genuinely confused about the process.

What does a referral mean exactly? My interpretation was just that they forward your resume to a colleague and that’s a “referral”. Is there a system that notifies the entire process whenever a referral is given out? I’m a bit confused if I’m seeing 2 different kind of referrals here.
