How much is too much?

Had a chat with a colleague of mine today, and I was surprised about something they said about IB job applications. “If you apply for multiple roles from the same email address, it will have a negative impact on the chances of getting hired.”

I do understand the system picks out on last names and DOB as keys for each candidate.

So, I beg of someone to let the less knowledgable ones like myself know. Is that true? If so, should I make a new email address to make new future applications?

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Based on previous WSO threads, applying for multiple roles within the same firm using the same email address is not inherently a problem, but it can raise red flags if not done strategically. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Targeted Applications: Applying to multiple roles across different divisions (e.g., IB, S&T, AM) within the same firm can sometimes signal a lack of focus or clear career goals. It's better to tailor your applications to roles that align with your skills and interests.

  2. Email Address Strategy: While some users have mentioned creating multiple email addresses to apply for the same role or different roles, this approach is generally not recommended. It can come across as disingenuous if discovered, and firms often track applications using more than just email (e.g., name, DOB, and other identifiers).

  3. Recruiter Insights: Recruiters and HR teams are aware of candidates applying to multiple roles. If you're genuinely interested in different positions, it's better to explain your interest in a cover letter or during networking conversations rather than trying to "game" the system.

  4. Networking is Key: Instead of focusing on creating new email addresses, invest time in networking. Cold emailing alumni or professionals in the industry can help you get your application flagged for the right role.

In summary, applying strategically and networking effectively will yield better results than creating multiple email addresses. Happy New Year, and good luck with your applications!
