How to ask network for a referral?

Hi, I am a super non-target(GPA3.7+) and I have been networking pretty hard for about 6 months. I have a good network built up and with 2021 applications opening I want to ask my network for the referrals. Most conversations have gone well and they have referred me to their peers or said "Yeah, lets stay in touch." but how do I ask for the referral to the firm? Is it just "Hey, we talked a month ago you said to follow up with you when applications open.... Can you give my resume to HR?" lol

What have you guys done? What is the best approach without sounding to pushy? Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, when it comes to referrals its a very tricky subject in my opinion. You have already expressed your interest- that is enough. Anything more than that is pushing it. Unless they are brain dead- they are aware of the referral process, and if they want to give you one- they will.

When I was networking, after talking to someone for the second or third time usually, they would say "hey, I know our applications are opening up soon, thanks for staying in touch, Ill be sure to put your name in the pot when HR asks us" - or something to that effect. If I were to ask them for a referral outright it would be kind of taboo and seen as crossing the line- they might see me as simply using them (which isnt true- the only people who have given me referrals genuinely connected with me and we stay in touch about things other than finance)

TLDR: Its a tricky subject- dont ask for it- theyll offer it instead if they want to give it to you

How I can follow up in case they forget me? For example, I had a phone call with a VP at the beginning of Aug while they will not start viewing resume until Sep 30. What's the right time to follow up? Or how many time should I follow up?

So instead of asking for a referral just keep networking and hope that my name pops up when the time comes? I'm afraid because I haven't reached out to some in a month plus my name wont be the go to!

When you called them and expressed your interest, they know that you would want a referral. I would no push too far like "can you please refer me" since that is...not the way in my opinion (others might argue differently and I understand). However, you should not just sit there, talk how much you like the firm, and wait for them to take action. I would recommend you prove how much of a win for them to refer you (determination, technicals, and interest), and when the application is open, remind them: "as the applications are now open, do you have any advice for me to best position myself for an interview at your firm/team?" Whether they want to refer or not, it is up to how much they believe in your potential here (but you have to remind them). Good luck pal!
