HS Internships, Advice?

I'm an incoming freshman to a target school. Is there any point of doing a high school internship at this stage? My options are Deloitte & a smaller company that facilitates trading and functions as consultancy/advisory.

I'm grounded due to doing some shady bs so can't really hang out with friends but I'd be allowed to do an internship so yeah, any advice?

Jumping straight into it—yes, there’s definitely value in doing a high school internship, especially given your options. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s why and how you should approach it:

  1. Deloitte vs. Smaller Company:

    • Deloitte: A big name like Deloitte on your resume early on can be a strong signal to future recruiters. Even if the work is basic, the brand recognition alone can help open doors later.
    • Smaller Company: If the smaller company offers more hands-on experience, especially in trading or consultancy, it could give you practical skills and a better understanding of the industry. This is particularly valuable if you’re aiming for IB or consulting in the future.
  2. Why It’s Worth It:

    • Networking: Internships, even at this stage, allow you to start building connections. Whether it’s at Deloitte or the smaller firm, the relationships you form now could help you later when recruiting for internships or full-time roles.
    • Skill Development: You’ll gain exposure to professional environments, learn basic technical skills, and develop soft skills like communication and teamwork.
    • Resume Boost: Having an internship before even starting college sets you apart from peers. It shows initiative and a proactive mindset.
  3. How to Maximize the Experience:

    • Be Curious: Ask questions, show interest, and learn as much as you can about the industry and the work being done.
    • Build Relationships: Get to know your colleagues and supervisors. Even a quick coffee chat can leave a lasting impression.
    • Document Your Work: Keep track of your contributions and achievements. These will be useful for future interviews and applications.
  4. Grounded? Use It to Your Advantage:

    • Since you’re grounded and have fewer distractions, this is the perfect time to focus on an internship. Treat it as an opportunity to channel your energy productively and set yourself up for success.

If you can manage it, aim to do both internships (if timing allows). Otherwise, weigh the brand name of Deloitte against the hands-on experience at the smaller firm and choose based on your long-term goals. Either way, you’re already ahead of the game!
